Mr. Sujeewa
Samaraweera the Chief Executive Officer of Sri Lanka Institute of Local
Governance said it has been planned to offer scholarships for journalists from
their Institution. He said these views addressing the gathering at an awareness
workshop on Local Governance.
The Sri Lanka
Institute of Local Governance inaugurated recently, a series of awareness
workshops on the current Local Governance System in Sri Lanka. The workshop
addressed about the legal background, powers and the duty of Local Government
Authorities (Pradeshiya Sabha, Urban Councils, and Municipal Councils). The
first workshop was held recently at Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, Colombo 07
under the patronage of the Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government
FaiszerMusthapha.
The only
Institution to train members of Local Authorities at regional level is The Sri
Lanka Institute of Local Governance. Mr. Sujeewa Samaraweera the Chief
Executive Officer of Sri Lanka Institute of Local Governance stated that the
institution is in the process of modernizing syllabuses in Certificate, Diploma
and Higher Diploma Levels as per currents requirements. University of Sri
Jayawardhanapura is assisting in this task. Also Mr. Sujeewa Samaraweera stated
that the Institution will inaugurate a programme of offering scholarships for
journalists to study in these courses.
Expressing views at
the workshop, Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government (President’s
Counsel) FaiszerMusthapha said “The Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local
Government holds a great responsibility also it is expanded in a broader
contest. We are always taking measures to protect the independence of Local
Authorities. If there are any defects of my Ministry, I am asking from
journalists to report it. We will pay attention towards them and act
effectively for the betterment of the public.
