Minister of Provincial Councils and local Government (President’s
Counsel)Faiszer Musthapha stated that technical assistance from America will be
given toour country in order to reduce disaster risk. He said that America has
given us the technical support even after Tsunami. Minister Musthapha said this
after meeting the affected community in Aranayaka and Kolonnawa with the U.S.
Ambassador to Sri Lanka.
On the instructions of H.E. the President, Minister Musthapha with the
technical support from the United States of America, has initiated a programme
to assist the victims from landslide and flood in Aranayaka and Colombo
districts.Accordingly, under the patronage of Hon. Minister FaiszerMusthapha,
AthulKeshap the U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka, South Asia Regional Advisor for
Disaster Risk Reduction Dr. Michael J. Ernst, the Secretary of the Ministry of
Provincial Councils and Local Government Mr. Kamal Padmasiri and Mr.
AselaIddawela the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Land Reclamation & Development
Corporation visited the affected areas in Aranayaka today morning (25th
May 2016). After that the group of representatives met the affected community
and discussed their issues. At Aranayaka Divisional Secretariat Office, they
discussed on the issue with the relevant officers.
In the evening Minister Musthapha along with the U.S. Ambassador to Sri
LankaAthulKeshap and the group of representatives visited Sedawatta, Welewatta,
and Salawatta in Colombo, Kolonnawa Divisional Secretariat. A discussion was
held among the officers on assisting the affected community.
Dr. Michael J. Ernst, the South Asia Regional Advisor for Disaster Risk
Reduction has come to Sri Lanka to observe and find the reasons for recent
disasters and to give the technical support to reduce the risk. Dr. Michael J.
Ernst has over twenty years of experience in the field of Humanitarian
assistance, disaster risk reduction, and International Development. In addition
he was an expert consultant in Disaster Management Programme in New Delhi.
