The government has planned to nationalize 1,210 rural bridges before the
end of the next year. These bridges will be constructed under the programme of
‘Constructing Rural Bridges’ which is carried out by the Ministry of Provincial
Councils and Local Government. This programme was implemented under foreign
funds. The project was inaugurated under three phases and bridges which cost
more than 45,000 million rupees will be constructed in each province.
Aim of constructing rural bridges is to ensure the safety of the rural
community and to enhance their way of living. In addition the government aims
at improving national economy of the country and having the maximum use of the
resources in rural areas which are not used so far.
Under the first phase, construction of 210 bridges was inaugurated in
Western, Southern, Central, Uva, North Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces. 95%
of those constructions are concluded by now. Those 210 bridges will be opened
within this year. 6,843.00 million rupees are to be spent for the first phase
and this is funded by the United States.
Constructions of 537 bridges are to be inaugurated under the second phase.
391 of them have been already started their constructions and the progress is 15%.
20,000.00 million rupees will be spent for these constructions and this is also
funded by the United States.
Under the third phase, constructions of 463 bridges are to be initiated
and 230 of them are already started. 10%
of those constructions are ended by now. 18,600.00 million rupees will be spent
for this and it is funded by Netherland.
