World Vision launches Shiksha/Kalvi Campaign to transform 50 schools in 50 weeks

Colombo, Sri Lanka - World Vision Lanka officially launched Shiksha/Kalvi Campaign, a landmark initiative to uplift 50 under-resourced schools across 25 districts in Sri Lakna for more than 15,000 children. The initiative was launched in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, other government and local partnerships and World Vision Lanka-led interventions. During the event, Education Minister and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya vetted World Vision Lanka’s Shiksha/Kalvi initiative in a letter read by her representative, A.H.M. Fazil, Deputy Director of Education Policy and Planning Branch. It read, “The Shiksha campaign comes at a timely moment in our nation’s journey”. “The Government greatly values such partnerships. Achieving our aspirations for education requires the collective efforts of the public sector, civil society, the private sector, development partners, and communities themselves. The Shiksha campaign demonstrate the power of collaboration in creating lasting change and ensuring that no child is left behind.” she said in her letter. SHIKSHA / KALVI, popularly known as “50 Schools in 50 Weeks,” is a landmark national initiative commemorating 50 years of World Vision Lanka’s service to Sri Lanka’s children. The campaign targets at providing solutions to the most pressing gaps in school infrastructure, including Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities, classroom construction and renovation, IT and science laboratories, and improved accessibility for children with disabilities. The campaign also includes the installation of smart classrooms, teacher training, school nutrition gardens to support meal programmes, and the provision of sports equipment, aesthetic instruments, and sensory education materials for primary grades. “School is where a child spends the most of their childhood — nearly 12 years of growing, learning, and becoming who they are meant to be,” said Dr. Dhanan Senathirajah, National Director, World Vision Lanka, “A school should be a space that equips, empowers, and nurtures every child.” “This innovative campaign draws on our five decades of experience in education, community development, and child wellbeing,” he says, “The process will be community-participatory, with space for the voices of children, parents, teachers, and other stakeholders on the ground and ensure community ownership and long-term sustainability.” At the event Stanlake Kaziboni, Director – Partnerships and Resource Development of World Vision Lanka, reminded the audience that many present, had benefited from supportive learning environments during their formative years. He challenged participants to extend the same opportunity to children in underserved communities, enabling them to discover their potential and pursue their aspirations with confidence. The event concluded with a symbolic pledge of support, inviting participants to contribute to SHIKSHA / KALVI through financial donations and gifts-in-kind to help address the specific needs of schools across the country.
